I wanted to start a small-business for a long time but I waited. Waited for months—which I regretted a whole lot—because I couldn’t think of a suitable name. For some, you might think it’s crazy, why don’t you just use a name generator? It’s just ‘a name’, is it even that important what you call it? YES, when it comes to small business success, the right name can make or break a business. Ideally your name should convey the uniqueness and value of your product or service instantly to customers.
If you are stuck on what to call your cake business or not even sure where to start, then read on for some helpful tips and guides that will make your naming process super easy. Also, be sure to check out the bonus at the end of the post.
Step 1: Ask yourself what your cake business is all about
The first step is the hardest; you need to get the strong foundation in place before building your cake empire. This ensures you will have a business name that you will be proud of for years to come. Here are a couple of questions you need to ask yourself:
- What makes your business unique? (Do you sell a niche type of baked goods or use a particular ingredient?)
- Which 3 words do you want your customers to associate with your business?
- Who is your ideal customer?
- What is your baking talent?
- What brand names do you love and what is that you love about it?
I recommend that you write your answers down as detailed as possible. That way, you will most likely to come up with tons of descriptive words that you can use in your name.
Step 2: Create a list of words to describe your brand
Now, here’s the fun part. Create a list with all the words that best describe your cake business, pick out words that you like from everything you wrote down in Step 1. What I love to do is to use Thesaurus or WordHippo to get more similar meaning words.
For example if the core of your cake business is Wedding Cake, some of the words to look into are love, passion, adore, vanilla, devoted, joy, buttercream, everlasting, red velvet, eternal, timeless, flowers, knot, sweet, memories, special and pure. Then think of other related words until you have a long list. Be sure to write down the words, better on a sheet of paper.
Step 3: Get creative! Putting words together
Look at your list, now we need to put the words into 2 categories, one for adjectives and one for nouns, for easier pairing. However, do try to pair them up even if they are in the same category. Who knows what special combinations you might find! Don’t be afraid to get creative!
Find combinations that not only appeal to you but also to your target customers, try to invoke up pleasant memories so customers respond to your business name on an emotional level too.
Things to keep in mind: make sure your name is easy to pronounce and spell.
Step 4: The domain and social media test
Great, so after you have narrowed the list down to your top 3 favorites, you are now ready to do a domain and social media test. Go to namecheap.com and key in your names. If it’s available, congratulations! Don’t buy it now since you can get it for FREE (see Step 5). Do the same thing with the rest of the social media platforms that you think are suitable for your business. I recommend to at least sign up for Facebook and Instagram.
If the names are unavailable, go back to Step 3 and create other cool combos and try Step 4 again until you find something that you are proud of.
Having your own domain name is important because it helps build credibility to small businesses, makes you and your business look professional, shows your commitment to your business and the best part of all, you can have your own personalized email addresses. For sure ‘email@example.com’ looks better than ‘firstname.lastname@example.org’ right?
Same goes for having your own website hosting—it makes your small business appears bigger and reliable. I know, building a website can be very daunting especially to those that are non tech savvy but fear not, you don’t need a full website to look professional, you just need a landing page that connects to your main social medias. We also offer this service at affordable price, just contact us.
If you know how to build a website or a landing page but still need the hosting, I personally uses SiteGround for my hosting and domain name and I can’t say enough of good things about them. The hosting is cheap and reliable and they’ll give you the domain name for free for lifetime. The customer service is amazing and 24/7. Then, when you are ready to expand, you can even start selling your cakes and services online converting your landing page in a real ecommerce website.
Step 5: Spread it
I’m so glad you didn’t put your amazing cake business idea on the back burner because you were waiting for the perfect name to come to you (like I did), instead you took action! Good job! And now it’s time to spread the amazing name out to the world and build your dream business.
